The Canyon Vibe

Reflecting on two articles from last week's newsletter

Last week I shared two pieces about words, Living with Our Inner Voice and The House That Words Built. I want to thank those who reached out with feedback and encouragement.

Hearing that these reflections resonated with you means a lot. Writing, to me, is a conversation. Your responses remind me that the words we choose and the tone we carry can find their way home.

If you missed those articles, you can find them in the previous issue of The Mountain Weekly at newsletter.mtnnewsletter.com/archives.

Remember, if you’d like to get a notification each time a new issue is released, download the app and join 38 Bulletin’s growing membership. Links are below.

The Mirror in the Mountains

Why 108? The Layered Meaning

Exploring how the meaning of one ancient number reveals the many layers of human experience.

Some numbers whisper through history, while others seem to hum quietly in the background of time.

For more than two thousand years, 108 has appeared in prayers, rituals, and meditation practices from the foothills of Nepal to the shores of Japan. It marks the beads on a mala, the tolls of a temple bell, even the breaths a monk may count in a single sitting. But what makes this number so sacred? Why 108?

At first glance, it feels mathematical, almost scientific. Six senses, three feelings, two reactions, three times. Multiply them and you get a complete equation of human experience. Every sight, sound, touch, taste, thought, or memory becomes part of that web. In this sense, 108 describes not a belief but a blueprint for consciousness itself.

Look a little deeper and the number turns poetic. Each of the 108 possibilities reflects the way we meet life, with attachment, aversion, or clarity. It becomes a mirror of the mind, showing how our reactions shape the world we see. The number does not preach; it points. It says, Here are all the ways you can lose yourself and all the ways you can come home again.

Go deeper still and 108 stops being about counting altogether. It becomes rhythm, the steady pulse of awareness, the geometry of being present. It represents the countless ways we can remember who we are when the noise quiets and the breath steadies.

The meaning of 108 is not hidden. It is layered, like concentric rings in water. For some it is mathematics, for others devotion, for others still a quiet way of mapping the mind. Perhaps that is the real secret: it holds all of them, and it holds you too.

Every time you pause, breathe, or notice yourself returning to the moment, that is one of your 108. The question is never really why 108?

It is which one are you living right now?

Part Two:

The Enneagram Connection

Lasty week in review... Looking Back on Part One: What the Enneagram Is and Isn’t

Last week, we began this journey by exploring what the Enneagram really is, and what it isn’t.

It’s not a label or a box; it’s a mirror that helps us see the deeper why behind our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

We also learned about the three centers of intelligence: Heart, Head, and Body, and how each interprets reality in its own way.

The heart feels through emotion and connection.
The head thinks through patterns and possibilities.
The body senses through instinct and action.

Your assignment last week was to observe which of these centers tends to lead when you’re under pressure or when something stirs you deeply.

The assignment may have led you to start recognizing a “first responder” inside you, the part that jumps up to manage the moment.

That awareness is the foundation for what comes next. All you gotta do is join the group inside the 38 Bulletin App for Part Two: Discovering the Inner Contract
